How Much Data Do You Need To Watch Showmax

How Much Data Do You Need To Watch Showmax?

How long is a piece of string, neither of these questions have a definitive answer it depends on a number of variables, but we have tried to give you a few guidelines and measuring sticks so that you can have an idea of how much data you need and what you can watch.

The below table gives a pretty good estimate of how much data is used to watch Showmax.

DataViewing Hours
1 GB3 Hours
2 GB9 Hours
5 GB16 Hours
*This data has been taken directly from the Showmax website.
How Much Data Do You Need To Watch Showmax HD vs SD

With Showmax you get the option to watch in SD or HD resolution. Streaming in SD will use less data than in HD, so if you are concerned about data usage or have a slow line speed, choose SD. SD is 576i (+-633MB per hour) while HD content is 1080i (+-2.2GB per hour).

Another source has slightly different stats and was measured using Netflix. Techforluddites.com measured their data consumption as: “watching movies or TV shows on Netflix uses about 1 GB of data per hour for each stream of standard definition video, and up to 3 GB per hour for each stream of HD video.”

Again these are just estimates and it depends on the quality of the video you are streaming and if you watch it in SD or HD.

We advise you to watch movies and TV on the internet using uncapped Wifi as much sa possible, but we know this is not always the case. Another way to save on your data costs is to download your movies and shows between midnight and 6 am on your midnight data and then watch them later when you want to. remember this is possible on Showmax.

Happy viewing.

What is Open PVR

In addition to OpenView HD, OpenView launched an exciting Open PVR service (personal video recorder), which allows OpenView subscribers with the latest decoder models to enjoy premium features on OpenView with the innovative Open PVR capabilities. Open PVR gives South African OpenView viewers the chance to record and store free-to-air content of their favorite shows without being restricted to watch them at a specific time. Thereby giving them the opportunity to watch their shows whenever they please at their own time.

In addition, Open PVR provides viewers with the exclusive opportunity to schedule recordings across a range of channels, through easy to use functionality. As well as pause live television for up to 15 minutes. Viewers will also be able to record one channel while watching another channel, thereby making sure they don’t miss out on a single second of the action and drama on their television screens.

Openview Satellite TV Decoder and Dish
How Much Does OpenView HD Cost

Here are the pricing options for OpenView:
OpenView Decoder with Satellite: R 1399
OpenView Decoder: Openview decoder prices start at R499 at leading retail stores nationwide.
Open PVR: R 199
OpenView HD with Dish, Decoder & Installation: R 1599

By far one of the greatest features of OpenView is the fact that there are NO monthly fees and no contracts! Yes, you read that right! You just pay a once off fee for your decoder and dish (that’s if you don’t already have an existing dish installed), plug it in, install and activate it and you are good to go, and free to sit back, relax and enjoy crystal clear satellite TV right at your finger-tips in the comfort of your own home anywhere in South Africa.

How to connect to OpenView

The OpenView connection process is easy and hassle free. If you already have a satellite dish in place and would like to install and activate your decoder you can do so with a RCA Cable, a AV Mini Jack or an HDMI cable.

Click here to read our step-by-step guide on how to connect your Openview decoder to your TV.

To connect your decoder to the satellite dish, you will need to connect the LNB cable from your satellite dish to the LNB IN or DISH IN slot at the back of your decoder. There are three ways to connect your decoder to your TV. Read more here.

Can you use a DStv dish for you OpenView HD?

Yes! OpenView HD is compatible with any existing satellite dish, including your DStv dish. Therefore, simply put, if you have an installed dish, that has been used to receive DStv, Freevision, StarSat/Top TV or Vivid, you can use the same dish to receive OpenView HD.

If you already have a working satellite dish on IS-20 satellite (pointing North East), all you need to do is buy the OpenView decoder, plug it in and follow the activation instructions and you’ll be good to go!

However, please note that even though DStv and OpenView use the same IS20 Satellite, they use different transponders/frequencies. Therefore, although you can most definitely use your existing DStv dish for your OpenView HD (and by no means need to purchase a new one) in order to receive the optimal OpenView signal, the dish needs to be turned to 68.5 degrees in a north-easterly direction.

Would I need to buy a new TV set & can you keep your DStv as well as have OpenView at the same time?

These are two frequently asked question we often receive. First off, no, you absolutely do not need to buy a new TV set or replace your current TV in order to utilize OpenView. OpenView is compatible with all TV sets, both SD and HD, old and new. All you need to do is get it installed, activated and set-up and you’re ready to start watching! However, every TV set would need its own decoder in order to view different channels simultaneously.

Secondly, with regards to having both DStv as well as OpenView, that is perfectly acceptable. Two decoders can be connected to a single TV using a dual LNB. If you are not 100% sure how to do that, call your local installer for assistance.

DSTV Error 48-32 E48-32 Clouds Text

How to Solve Error E48-32

DSTV Error Code E48-32

One of the most common DSTV error codes users experience is the E48-32 along with a message that says, “There is no signal due to bad weather, faulty wiring, or wrong installation.” If this has happened to you one or two times, the struggle of figuring out how to fix it can be very frustrating especially if it is something you personally cannot do on your own.

DSTV Errors Error 48-32 E48-32 - DSTV Bad Weather Error - Bad Signal

This error usually comes from the DSTV decoder models 4S, 4U, 5S, 5U, and Explora 1, 2, and 3. If you still own a HD PVR 2P and 4P, the message will say, “searching for footprint” and for those who still own 1110, 1131, and 1132 models the message will say “Searching for signal.”

If this problem persists you will need to call your local DSTV installer to come and look at the problem and test your system and maybe realign your dish.

DSTV Error 48-32 E48-32 Clouds

What is Causing the problem?

Normally, this error would only be temporary if a rainstorm causes it, but it can also cause permanent damage if your dish is not installed properly with faulty or obstructed wiring.

  • Rain Fade – This causes the user’s signal to get lost because of a strong rain shower amid your dish and the satellite in the DSTV transmitting dish at the broadcast company. If this is the culprit, there is nothing much you can do about the problem except to make sure that your dish is seamlessly corrected by a licensed technician and a signal strength meter. The other option would be to have a bigger dish installed, so that the dish can provide a sturdier signal and overcome the signal loss during smaller storms.
  • Obstruction – This is caused by balconies, trees, or overhanging roofs. To fix this problem, you can cut down some branches on the trees or move the dish to a better location where it cannot be obstructed. There are special dish brackets available for purchase, which you can avail and mount on another part of your house over your roof so that it is above the trees.

DSTV Error 48-32 E48-32

Other Faulty Satellite Dish Installation Possibilities

  • Low Noise Block (LNB) – a faulty LNB is quite common especially after a rainstorm because it is sensitive to electronic items. If you do not know what this is, it is the “eye” on the end your dish’s metal arm. If the skew angle on your LNB is incorrect, it could cause a high bit error rate (BER) and lower the quality of your signal. This is also a result of non-licensed technicians who use cheap signal satellite finders that do not have the capability to measure BER.
  • In some cases, if your dish is not mounted properly, bumped, or misaligned, it can also cause signal issues. This is why having a licensed installer is important, so as not to cause issues.
  • Water could also be an issue, especially if it gets into the cables. If you see that it has nothing to do water, it could also be due to poor workmanship where the F-connector on the cable has not been waterproofed at the Low Noise Block. The water could have entered the LNB, which can happen if the plastic cover found on the front is too old and ends up cracking in the sun.
  • Check if your inline cables are faulty. If they are exposed to moisture especially since they are outside it can cause your signal to weaken. Ideally, your cables should have no joints. Should the need arise for joints; these should be placed inside your house not outside.
  • Loose F connectors that loosen from the cable can also cause signal loss. When a decoder has been connected and disconnected one too many times, it can cause your signal to weaken. At times, this can also be caused by accidentally pulling out the cable out of its connector while cleaning behind the TV.

Netflix How To | The Best Smart DNS Proxy to Watch Netflix America in South Africa

If you are a big Netflix fan, but you are frustrated by the limited content on the South African site, you can watch Netflix America in South Africa by using a Smart DNS proxy. It’s a fast and easy way to unblock geo-restricted content.

What is a Smart DNS Proxy

A DNS (Domain Name System) is the system that turns a domain name into IP (Internet Protocol) address. For example, google.com becomes 8.8.8.8. Usually the DNS is located close to your computer’s IP address. And an IP address is assigned according to your location.

By using a Smart DNS, you can transfer your IP address location to another country. Unlike using a VPN, it does not permanently change your IP address, it simply relocates it. If you want to access Netflix America in South Africa, and not compromise your online streaming speed, it is recommended to use a Smart DNS Proxy. To access Netflix America you still need to pay for the content, but you must first hide your real location.

The Risks of Using a Free Smart DNS Service
Opting to use a free Smart DNS service can be tempting, but it is not advisable. Once you activate a DNS it acts as a proxy between your device and online browsing. Oftentimes free DNS proxies are used to mine data. The usage can range from innocent marketing purposes, to criminal intent to steal your personal information. It’s best to choose a reputable Smart DNS service.

Another problem with free Smart DNS services, is that they often don’t allow you to use https:// sites. The s in the http stands for secure. Without this, you are exposed online, without any guarantees of browsing safely. It is another way of compromising your cyber security and potentially exposing your personal information to cyber criminals.

The most important aspect of choosing a Smart DNS service provider, is to make sure you know where the proxy is located. Every country has different privacy and cybersecurity laws. In some countries it’s legal to sell your online browsing data. Plus, other countries are forced by their governments to store certain personal data of clients.

Carefully read through the company’s privacy policy. If you feel uncomfortable with certain stipulations, rather choose a different provider. Also, make sure that the DNS service has good security protocols. If it forbids the usage of https:// — do not choose it.

How to Choose Between a Smart DNS and VPN?

If you want to watch Netflix America in South Africa, you can do so with a Smart DNS proxy or VPN (Virtual Private Network) Read our post how to watch American Netflix in South Africa to learn more about the different options available to access the Netflix America suite of programs in South Africa.

Smart DNS Proxy vs VPN

Before we look at the best option for you to choose, first a basic explanation of the difference between the two technologies.

A Smart DNS is used to access geo-restricted content. A DNS (Domain Name System) is the system that translates internet domain names into IP (Internet Protocol) addresses. For instance, google.com becomes 8.8.8.8.The DNS is usually located close to your computer’s IP address. If you use a Smart DNS provider, information will be redirected through a proxy server, which is not restricted by your current location.

Alternatively you can use a VPN which is used to add privacy and security to all your online activity. Setting up a VPN tunnel, your identity and online activity will be encrypted, meaning that outside sources can’t access your location or track your searches.

The biggest difference between a Smart DNS and a VPN is the privacy. A Smart DNS does not use encrypted connections. It also doesn’t change your device’s IP address. The DNS server location is used to gain access to blocked content.

Your connection to the internet will be faster with a Smart DNS because there is no delay to encrypt data, as with a VPN tunnel. If you are interested in cyber security, you will need to choose a VPN.

Smart DNS Explained

To access Netflix America in South Africa, you need to trick the service into thinking that you are in America. You will still need to pay for the content, creating a separate account for the American Netflix site.

If you are only concerned with streaming speed, you can use the Smart DNS technology to do this. By using a remote DNS server, you will be able to mask your location, but your private information will not be encrypted and your IP address not hidden.

VPN Explained

The VPN technology is a great way to protect your online privacy. Although using a VPN’s encrypted tunnel can slow down your browsing speed, it is a small price to pay to remain protected online.

A VPN service will create a new IP address for your device, which is not linked to your location, offering you access to Netflix America in South Africa. The Virtual Private Network (VPN) creates an encrypted middleman point between your device and the internet, where your IP address is changed and it becomes anonymous.

Choosing Between a Smart DNS and a VPN

Both these options will change or hide your device’s location to unlock geo-restricted content, so you can use either to watch Netflix America in South Africa. Your choice will depend on whether you are interested in online streaming speed or data security.

The Smart DNS will only reroute/redirection a portion of your web traffic, compared to a VPN which encrypts all of your online activity through the encryption tunnel. This function of the VPN will have an effect on the online streaming speed. If you are not concerned about online browsing anonymity, you can use a Smart DNS to access Netflix America in South Africa.

Risks of Using a Smart DNS Service

How to Watch American Netflix in South Africa

You might be tempted to opt to use a free Smart DNS service provider. The DNS becomes the proxy between your device and the internet. This means that the proxy has access to your online activity. Many free proxies are used to mine data. It could be as innocent as gathering browsing information for marketing purposes, but some free Smart DNS proxies also use their service to steal your personal information. Rather use a reputable Smart DNS service provider.

With a free Smart DNS service you also don’t know who is providing you with the IP address codes. It could be generated by a cybercriminal organization or maybe a government surveillance program. While you are using the free Smart DNS service, you are giving up your personal information such as usernames and passwords, as well as bank account numbers.

Some Smart DNS services don’t allow you to use https:// sites. This is a safety feature of browsers, to give you cyber safety. The http:// sites expose your online activity, offering up your personal information to anyone that has access to the proxy. An unsecure Smart DNS service can also manipulate the website you visit, stealing cooking or injecting advertising. Oftentimes these ads can carry malware.

How to Use a Smart DNS Proxy Safely

It’s best to rather use a paid Smart DNS service. This way you know exactly who you are dealing with. A legitimate provider will offer you information about their whereabouts and openly offer you their operating procedures.

You can also do more research about the company through a thorough online search. If there are any security risks, you will be warned by other users that have used their services. It’s important to check in which country the Smart DNS provider is located. Each country has its own set of cybersecurity and privacy laws. In some countries it is legal to sell your browsing data.

Make sure you carefully read the company’s privacy policy. Even if it is a legitimate provider, you may be offering up certain privacy rights, affecting how the proxy provider will be dealing with your personal information. If at any time you feel uncertain of the company’s operating procedures, rather choose another one. Lastly, make sure that the DNS provider has good security protocols in place. If it forbids the use of https:// — do not use it. Some companies will even offer extra encryption protocols for better online security and secure connections.

Risks of Using a VPN

How to Watch American Netflix in South Africa

Same as with Smart DNS proxies, if you choose to use a free VPN, you are at risk of your online security being compromised. It is crucial to read the company’s privacy policy, because you are allowing a third party to handle your online data.

The VPN offers you online privacy by agreeing to not do any IP logging, or at least as little as possible. If you choose to use a disreputable VPN service, you can’t tell what they are doing with the logs they might be keeping. A VPN provider must also adhere to the country’s privacy laws. Some governments require by law that some user information is stored. So make sure you know from which country your VPN service provider operates.

If you decide to use a free VPN service provider or one with a dubious privacy policy, you can be exposed to a man-in-the-middle-attack. This means you think you are connecting directly with a website. But a third party first has access to your personal information. Some VPN’s also have a lot of traffic restrictions, which can affect your browsing experience.

How to Use a VPN Safely

It is best to use a paid VPN service provider. You can research the company properly to make sure that you agree with all their privacy policies. Also read other people’s opinions of the company. A strong encryption protocol and good privacy policies will ensure a safe online experience.

Check up on your VPN service provider’s server network. To create a specific IP address, the VPN has to have servers located in that country. Once you know the country, you can read up about its cybersecurity and privacy laws. The servers also need to compensate for the encryption slowing down your internet connection. A reputable VPN service provider will have top speed servers. Lastly, make sure that the VPN service provider clearly states that it offers a strict zero-logging policy.

DSTV Trying to Regulate Netflix

There’s a new player in town, giving the satellite television service a run for its money. Although MultiChoice owns shares in ShowMax, an online streaming service, many people are flocking to Netflix for their series binge watching spree.

The Satellite Strategy

Online streaming services have become a game changer in the entertainment world. And this is only focusing on the legal services. Pirate sites are an alluring alternative for people wanting to see the latest episodes of their favourite series but trying to find a way around paying for it.

Related: How pirate content websites affect the entertainment industry

Stats show that MultiChoice has lost over 100 000 premium subscribers in the financial year from 2017 to 2018. The pay-TV operator must now reassess its business model to stay relevant despite the fierce entertainment competition. If DStv fails to rejuvenate its services, it is threatened by digital disruption.

According to Calvo Mawela, the CEO of MultiChoice SA, an issue arises with unregulated competition because Netflix has an unfair advantage as a video-streaming company. Currently the company is not subject to any regulatory pressure in South Africa.

Changing Directions

DStv is very aware of the fact that their viewers have changed their average viewing habits. More and more South Africans are catching on to the convenience of online content. Although the satellite broadcasting service still has a big loyal following, the company wants to aim at capturing a bigger online audience.

Showmax.

Besides offering subscribers access to ShowMax, MultiChoice has created a new online streaming service platform. With DStv Now you can access the satellite television’s content online. Plans are in the pipeline to launch a special 4K-streaming option for DStv Now, offering subscribers a higher resolution, high definition (HD) format. Other changes include possibly offering a new package that will be streaming-only. This way MultiChoice can directly compete on Netflix’s turf. There are also a few other online content services to contend with.

Why is DStv Losing Subscribers

Some onlookers speculate that the substantial subscriber loss is due to the financial challenges that consumers are facing. But MultiChoice still strongly suspects that it is losing many premium subscribers because of unregulated competition, with Netflix at the top of the online content services competitors.

MultiChoice believes that it is the responsibility of the Independent Communications Authority of SA (Icasa) to investigate a way of creating a level playing field so that the pay-TV operators can compete fairly with the over-the-top players. If Icasa does not comply with this request, DStv and other pay-TV operators might very soon be out of business.

Investigating the Allegations

In May 2018, the regulator conducted an inquiry with an oral hearing, listening to the complaints from the subscription television broadcasting services. It is considering opening the market to other players. The plan is to introduce shared sports rights, as well as shorter contract options for premium content.

MultiChoice feels that Icasa misunderstood the request and the inquiry is not focusing on the issue that was brought to them. DStv feels that competition in the industry can have a positive effect on services, they are not against it. The pay-TV operator wants to make its subscribers aware of the value offering they present, appreciating the services offered. They feel that the consumer will benefit from healthy competition.

But now Icasa has shifted its focus to regulate DStv more. MultiChoice still claims that over-the-top players like Netflix should be subjected to the same set of regulations as MultiChoice. Mawela feels that this will be in the best interest of the country. In an interview he pointed out that the country has national objectives to focus on. For instance, currently Netflix does not fall under the same tax compliance laws as MultiChoice. The online streaming company also does not comply with the black economic empowerment regulations.

Related: Legal issues and controversies surrounding Netflix

The Main Aim of The Request

Mawela went on to explain that he feels companies such as Netflix should be placed on the same playing field as local service providers. Netflix does not offer employment to anyone in South Africa, they don’t fall under the country’s tax laws, and they also do not offer any local content. MultiChoice’s main reason for requesting regulations from Icasa was to ensure that the pay-TV operators and the online streaming companies can stand on equal footing when competing for subscribers.

Interview: MultiChoice CEO Calvo Mawela on SABC News.

Netflix responded positively to the regulation request from MultiChoice. They intend to adhere to the local laws and tax structures of the countries that access their service. Netflix welcomed collaboration with regulators.

Paseka Maleka, Icasa spokesman, confirmed that the regulator is in the process of analysing the pay-TV market inquiry submissions. They aim to publish a conclusion on the matter by March 2019. According to William Bird, Media Monitoring Africa director, Netflix should be regulated. But he also thinks the pay-TV market monopoly should be regulated as well.

DSTV vs Netflix vs Showmax: Best TV Entertainment To Choose In South Africa

Almost a century ago the world was forever changed when a 21-year-old American inventor, Philo Taylor Farnsworth, created the first fully electronic television. The next big invention arrived in 1962 – satellite television.

There were a few sceptics in the beginning, speculating that the strange little box with pictures would never amount to very much. Who would have guessed that years later people would be constantly glued to that little box!

Satellite TV vs Digital Providers

The next evolution of entertainment came with online Subscription Video on Demand (SVoD) services. One of the most famous ones, Netflix, was founded in 1997. It is the world’s sixth-largest internet company, ranked by revenue. Currently it’s available in more than 190 countries.

Netflix hit the South African shores in 2016, a year after a local SVoD was founded. ShowMax was created in 2015, in partnership with DStv. After its successful launch, the company decided to make its services available through the existing DStv decoder.

So, you can get the best of both worlds, instead of deciding which type of provider is better. But let’s look at each separately to explore the pros and cons.

DStv vs Netflix vs Showmax Best TV Entertainment for South Africa

DStv

When it comes to satellite television, it does feel like DStv has a monopoly in South Africa. The other options are OpenView HD or StarSat. But it does seem that quality-wise, DStv remains the firm favourite.

They offer seven packages, ranging from R29 p/m for 15 channels to R759 p/m for 110 channels. Other add-ons include BoxOffice, a virtual DVD store, and special decoder options such as the personal video recorder (PVR).

The upside of a DStv subscription, is that you can choose a package that fits your budget. Instead of being stuck with only the local channels of SABC and Etv, you can broaden your viewing horizons with movie or documentary channels and more. If you are a big sports fan, DStv will keep you entertained for hours. Of all the local satellite provider options, DStv is definitely the best option if you want high-quality sport coverage.

DStv vs Netflix vs Showmax Best TV Entertainment for South Africa

Netflix

With its formidable reputation around the world, it’s exciting that this service is now available in South Africa. The company grew from a video-on-demand streaming service and DVD sales plus rentals, to solely focusing on online content.

In 2013 they also entered the content-production industry, debuting with the House of Cards series. Their exclusive content makes the service very popular. Plus, they support higher quality visual devices such as HD and Ultra HD.

Packages range from roughly R115 to R175 ($7.99 to $11.99). The different packages are linked to the type of streaming – the basic one offering one standard definition stream and the advanced up to four simultaneous high and ultra-high definition streams.

You have access to thousands of movies, series and documentaries with new additions every day. But there are some that complain about the fact that locally you only have access to about 5% of the international content. The exclusive content does remain a big perk. Popular series include Marvel’s Daredevil, Orange is the New Black and Narcos.

Try a 30-day free Netflix trial.

DStv vs Netflix vs Showmax Best TV Entertainment for South Africa

ShowMax

It’s basically the local version of Netflix but with more limited content. The monthly subscription is only R99, which definitely makes it a great subscription video on demand service to consider.

Starting out in 2015, the company offered about 750 different series and 400 movies. The service includes both international and local content. Golden oldies include Egoli, Orkney Snork Nie, Msawa and Ballade vir ’n Enkeling. International shows include Game of Thrones, True Detective and Entourage. They also showcase older classics such as Breaking Bad, The Newsroom and The Wire.

ShowMax is owned by Naspers. Does that name ring a bell? Yes, that’s the same owner of DStv. Both mediums also offer similar content. The biggest difference between Netflix and ShowMax, is the connection to DStv. Because of the partnership between the two companies, you can effortlessly combine the two services to enhance your viewing experience. But with ShowMax, you have to settle for lower quality streaming, on average 720p.

Try a 14-day free ShowMax trial.

Remember Digital Providers Use A Lot of Data

If you are considering completely breaking away from satellite television and only subscribing to Netflix or ShowMax, you must invest in a good data package. Uncapped is highly recommended to make sure you don’t receive an unexpected high bill.

A 22-minute HD series episode will consume about 400MB and a HD movie roughly 1GB to 1.5GB. Your internet connection also needs to be good. To stream a standard ShowMax show to just one device at a time, you will need a 2MB line or higher. If you want to stream a HD show to multiple devices, you need at least a 4MB line.

How to Decide Between Satellite Television and Digital Providers

It all depends on what you like watching. If you are big fan of a few specific series and you’ve got a good internet connection, you could consider cancelling your DStv subscription. But if you are for instance a big sports fanatic, it’s best to keep your subscription and DSTV installation. And in this case, ShowMax can be a nice addition.

On the DStv Compact or Compact Plus packages, a ShowMax subscription will only cost you R49 per month. It’s included for free in a DStv Premium package. Other packages will pay the usual fee of R99 per month. ShowMax can be added to any decoder qualify. But the DStv Explora decoder can be directly used as a streaming device if it is connected to the internet.

How to Connect ShowMax for Free to Your DSTV Account
