How long is a piece of string, neither of these questions have a definitive answer it depends on a number of variables, but we have tried to give you a few guidelines and measuring sticks so that you can have an idea of how much data you need and what you can watch.
The below table gives a pretty good estimate of how much data is used to watch Showmax.
Data
Viewing Hours
1 GB
3 Hours
2 GB
9 Hours
5 GB
16 Hours
*This data has been taken directly from the Showmax website.
With Showmax you get the option to watch in SD or HD resolution. Streaming in SD will use less data than in HD, so if you are concerned about data usage or have a slow line speed, choose SD. SD is 576i (+-633MB per hour) while HD content is 1080i (+-2.2GB per hour).
Another source has slightly different stats and was measured using Netflix. Techforluddites.com measured their data consumption as: “watching movies or TV shows on Netflix uses about 1 GB of data per hour for each stream of standard definition video, and up to 3 GB per hour for each stream of HD video.”
Again these are just estimates and it depends on the quality of the video you are streaming and if you watch it in SD or HD.
We advise you to watch movies and TV on the internet using uncapped Wifi as much sa possible, but we know this is not always the case. Another way to save on your data costs is to download your movies and shows between midnight and 6 am on your midnight data and then watch them later when you want to. remember this is possible on Showmax.
Happy viewing.

Are you trying to decide which satellite TV provider you should choose and what are the benefits of each? We are going to break each one down as much as possible including the content and channels you get with each and the price and cost involved.
Openview offers a free satellite TV service, all you have to do is buy the decoder and install a dish system and you get access to all the e-TV channels, while DSTV offers a number of DSTV packages, but for the purpose of this comparison we are going to compare the cheapest option, the DSTV Easyview option to Openview HD.
DSTV’s Easyview option costs R29 per month and you get 37 channels.
The easiest way to compare the two is in a table:
Description
Openview
DSTV Easyview
Monthly Price
Free
R29
Decoder Price
R1399 ( HD Decoder with satellite dish installation ) R599 ( HD Decoder only )
So if we compare the two just in the numbers then we get:
Description
Openview
DSTV Easyview
Monthly Cost
Free
R29
Decoder Cost
R1 399 ( HD Decoder with satellite dish) R499 ( HD Decoder only, excludes dish and installation )
R599 ( HD Decoder )
Installation Cost
Decoder and Dish comes with installation voucher
R649 with Installation voucher from GAME
Channels
19
37
So if you are looking for more channels then you should choose DSTV Easyview
However it is not as simple as that. We think it is important to know what kind of TV you like to watch before you decide.
If you like watching movies then Openview has more dedicate movie channels such as eMovies and Movies Extra.
If you like sport it is a bit tricker. If you enjoy all different kinds of sport then DSTV’s Supersport Blitz is a great option for highlights and news. If you mainly just love soccer then Openview HD might be a better bet for you.
Openview recently announced that they it had acquired the broadcast rights for the English Premier League.
This allows the free satellite TV service provider to broadcast Premier League matches live on its News & Sports channel.
Openview plans to broadcast one live match every week, which will usually include one of the top six Premier League clubs – Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester United, Manchester City, or Tottenham Hotspur. Please check with Openview to see if this is still the case when purchasing your Openview Decoder.
If you like faith based TV channels then DSTV is definitely your best option with their 5 religious channels.
Finally lets compare the costs involved. Openview HD offers a free monthly service but the decoder and installation cost is R1 399 for an HD Decoder, where DSTV’s decoder only costs R 599 for an HD Decoder.
So if you already have a satellite dish then the DSTV decoder is R 800 cheaper. This means that even though DSTV has a monthly cost of only R29 per month it will take 27 months ( i.e 2 years and three months ) before the cost of DSTV Easyview is the same as the Openview decoder cost.
For this reason we think that DSTV Easyview is cheaper than Openview HD.
Update: Openview now offers a HD decoder for only R499 that will work with your existing functioning satellite dish. This means that using this option Openview becomes the better and cheaper option. But if you already have a DSTV Easyview contract and decoder we would stick with that rather than changing.

The OpenView connection process is easy and hassle free. If you already have a satellite dish in place and would like to install and activate your decoder, here is a step-by-step guide on how to do just that. To connect your decoder to the satellite dish, you will need to connect the LNB cable from your satellite dish to the LNB IN or DISH IN slot at the back of your decoder. There are three ways to connect your decoder to your TV:
You can connect with an RCA Cable, an AV Mini Jack or an HDMI Cable
RCA Cable
If you are using an RCA cable connect the cables to the back of your decoder – matching the colours of the connectors to the colours of the ports (red to red, white to white and yellow to yellow).
Then, connect the other end of the cable to your TV. Make sure you are plugging them into the ports that are marked INPUT. Again, match the colours of the connectors to the colour of the ports (red to red, white to white and yellow to yellow).
If your TV does not have coloured ports, then plug the connectors in accordingly: yellow into VIDEO IN, white into AUDIO IN (L) and red into AUDIO IN (R) – if available.
AV Mini Jack
If you are using an AV mini jack cable, plug the single jack into the back of your decoder. Then, connect the other end of the cable to your TV.
Make sure you are plugging them into the ports that are marked INPUT. Match the colours of the connectors to the colour of the ports (red to red, white to white and yellow to yellow).
If your TV does not have coloured ports, then plug the connectors in accordingly: yellow into VIDEO IN, white into AUDIO IN (L) and red into AUDIO IN (R) – if available.
HDMI
If you are using an HDMI cable, then plug it into the HDMI port on the back of your decoder and then plug the other end into an HDMI port on your TV.
You will then need to switch to the relevant HDMI source/input channel on your television.
To power your decoder, you will need to connect the power cable to the decoder and connect it to a power source. Your decoder should then switch on and start scanning. Once scanning is complete you will see channel 100. Your decoder is now ready to be activated.

What is Open PVR
In addition to OpenView HD, OpenView launched an exciting Open PVR service (personal video recorder), which allows OpenView subscribers with the latest decoder models to enjoy premium features on OpenView with the innovative Open PVR capabilities. Open PVR gives South African OpenView viewers the chance to record and store free-to-air content of their favorite shows without being restricted to watch them at a specific time. Thereby giving them the opportunity to watch their shows whenever they please at their own time.
In addition, Open PVR provides viewers with the exclusive opportunity to schedule recordings across a range of channels, through easy to use functionality. As well as pause live television for up to 15 minutes. Viewers will also be able to record one channel while watching another channel, thereby making sure they don’t miss out on a single second of the action and drama on their television screens.
How Much Does OpenView HD Cost
Here are the pricing options for OpenView: OpenView Decoder with Satellite: R 1399 OpenView Decoder: Openview decoder prices start at R499 at leading retail stores nationwide. Open PVR: R 199 OpenView HD with Dish, Decoder & Installation: R 1599
By far one of the greatest features of OpenView is the fact that there are NO monthly fees and no contracts! Yes, you read that right! You just pay a once off fee for your decoder and dish (that’s if you don’t already have an existing dish installed), plug it in, install and activate it and you are good to go, and free to sit back, relax and enjoy crystal clear satellite TV right at your finger-tips in the comfort of your own home anywhere in South Africa.
How to connect to OpenView
The OpenView connection process is easy and hassle free. If you already have a satellite dish in place and would like to install and activate your decoder you can do so with a RCA Cable, a AV Mini Jack or an HDMI cable.
To connect your decoder to the satellite dish, you will need to connect the LNB cable from your satellite dish to the LNB IN or DISH IN slot at the back of your decoder. There are three ways to connect your decoder to your TV. Read more here.
Can you use a DStv dish for you OpenView HD?
Yes! OpenView HD is compatible with any existing satellite dish, including your DStv dish. Therefore, simply put, if you have an installed dish, that has been used to receive DStv, Freevision, StarSat/Top TV or Vivid, you can use the same dish to receive OpenView HD.
If you already have a working satellite dish on IS-20 satellite (pointing North East), all you need to do is buy the OpenView decoder, plug it in and follow the activation instructions and you’ll be good to go!
However, please note that even though DStv and OpenView use the same IS20 Satellite, they use different transponders/frequencies. Therefore, although you can most definitely use your existing DStv dish for your OpenView HD (and by no means need to purchase a new one) in order to receive the optimal OpenView signal, the dish needs to be turned to 68.5 degrees in a north-easterly direction.
Would I need to buy a new TV set & can you keep your DStv as well as have OpenView at the same time?
These are two frequently asked question we often receive. First off, no, you absolutely do not need to buy a new TV set or replace your current TV in order to utilize OpenView. OpenView is compatible with all TV sets, both SD and HD, old and new. All you need to do is get it installed, activated and set-up and you’re ready to start watching! However, every TV set would need its own decoder in order to view different channels simultaneously.
Secondly, with regards to having both DStv as well as OpenView, that is perfectly acceptable. Two decoders can be connected to a single TV using a dual LNB. If you are not 100% sure how to do that, call your local installer for assistance.
Set-up of OpenView
How to activate your OpenView
Once your decoder has been installed, completed scanning and channel 100 is playing, you will need to activate it. Please follow these steps:
Press the ‘HELP’ button on your OpenView remote control to display the help screen.
Write down your STB number.
Press ‘EXIT’ on your remote control to return to channel 100.
Dial the number on the bottom right-hand corner using a cell phone and follow the prompts. Use your STB number to complete your decoder activation.
Your decoder may reboot and update its software during the activation. Please allow a few minutes for this.
Once your decoder has been activated, you can use ‘P+’ and ‘P-’ or ‘P’ or ‘P’ buttons on your remote control to change channels.
Please do not attempt to activate your decoder if you have already attempted to activate it before. It may take up to 5 minutes to view your OpenView channels once the decoder has been activated.
How to setup your Open PVR
Follow these steps-by-step instructions on how to install, use, watch and record programmes on your Open PVR:
Installing your Open PVR
Insert your Open PVR USB stick into the USB port at the back of your Open PVR enabled Openview set-top box.
Once your set-top box is back on a prompt screen will appear. Select ‘OK’ to activate your Open PVR.
How to use your Open PVR to record a programme
Press the ‘GUIDE’ button on your Openview remote to display the programme guide.
Select the programme you would like to record and press the ‘RECORD’ button on your Openview remote to schedule the recording. A screen will pop up.
Select record and press ‘OK’ to confirm your recording.
How to watch and record programmes on your Open PVR
Press the ‘OPT’ or ‘PVR’ button depending on your Openview remote control, to view your recordings.
Select the programme you would like to play and enjoy. To pause live TV press the ‘PAUSE’ button on your remote control. You can pause live TV for up to 15 minutes with the 32G Open PVR USB stick and 30 minutes with the 64GB Open PVR USB stick.
PVR functionality is not available on SABC 1, SABC 2 or SABC 3. You should only insert an authentic Open PVR USB stick into your OpenView set-top box. Any other USB sticks will not function.

MultiChoice has released an updated price list for DStv subscriptions for 2020, with several packages getting an increase.
Updated fees will take effect from April 1, 2020.
What is DSTV Price Lock?
Multichoice has introduced DSTV Price Lock which allows subscribers to some money by locking in their monthly payment amount for 24 months.
This allows you to skip any price increases that may arise during the price lock period. Once the price lock period expires new prices become applicable for renewing your monthly subscription or new price lock rate.
You can also use Price Lock if you are using another decoder with XtraView and linking the two decoders.
Some packages do not offer Price Lock – They are the

One of the most common DSTV error codes users experience is the E48-32 along with a message that says, “There is no signal due to bad weather, faulty wiring, or wrong installation.” If this has happened to you one or two times, the struggle of figuring out how to fix it can be very frustrating especially if it is something you personally cannot do on your own.
This error usually comes from the DSTV decoder models 4S, 4U, 5S, 5U, and Explora 1, 2, and 3. If you still own a HD PVR 2P and 4P, the message will say, “searching for footprint” and for those who still own 1110, 1131, and 1132 models the message will say “Searching for signal.”
If this problem persists you will need to call your local DSTV installer to come and look at the problem and test your system and maybe realign your dish.
Normally, this error would only be temporary if a rainstorm causes it, but it can also cause permanent damage if your dish is not installed properly with faulty or obstructed wiring.
Rain Fade – This causes the user’s signal to get lost because of a strong rain shower amid your dish and the satellite in the DSTV transmitting dish at the broadcast company. If this is the culprit, there is nothing much you can do about the problem except to make sure that your dish is seamlessly corrected by a licensed technician and a signal strength meter. The other option would be to have a bigger dish installed, so that the dish can provide a sturdier signal and overcome the signal loss during smaller storms.
Obstruction – This is caused by balconies, trees, or overhanging roofs. To fix this problem, you can cut down some branches on the trees or move the dish to a better location where it cannot be obstructed. There are special dish brackets available for purchase, which you can avail and mount on another part of your house over your roof so that it is above the trees.
Other Faulty Satellite Dish Installation Possibilities
Low Noise Block (LNB) – a faulty LNB is quite common especially after a rainstorm because it is sensitive to electronic items. If you do not know what this is, it is the “eye” on the end your dish’s metal arm. If the skew angle on your LNB is incorrect, it could cause a high bit error rate (BER) and lower the quality of your signal. This is also a result of non-licensed technicians who use cheap signal satellite finders that do not have the capability to measure BER.
In some cases, if your dish is not mounted properly, bumped, or misaligned, it can also cause signal issues. This is why having a licensed installer is important, so as not to cause issues.
Water could also be an issue, especially if it gets into the cables. If you see that it has nothing to do water, it could also be due to poor workmanship where the F-connector on the cable has not been waterproofed at the Low Noise Block. The water could have entered the LNB, which can happen if the plastic cover found on the front is too old and ends up cracking in the sun.
Check if your inline cables are faulty. If they are exposed to moisture especially since they are outside it can cause your signal to weaken. Ideally, your cables should have no joints. Should the need arise for joints; these should be placed inside your house not outside.
Loose F connectors that loosen from the cable can also cause signal loss. When a decoder has been connected and disconnected one too many times, it can cause your signal to weaken. At times, this can also be caused by accidentally pulling out the cable out of its connector while cleaning behind the TV.

Who Created Netflix?
Reed Hastings and Marc Randolph created Netflix in Scotts Valley, California. Originally the business model included DVD sales and rentals via mail. But the sales stopped after a year, to solely focus on DVD rentals.
By 2010 they expanded into the streaming media world, but still kept the DVD and Blu-ray rentals on the side. In the same year they expanded their DVD rentals to Canada, the Caribbean, and Latin America. And in 2012 Netflix joined the content-production industry. Their debut series was Lilyhammer.
When Was Netflix Founded?
Netflix’s official launch was 29 August 1997. As of April 2019, the online streaming giant had more than 154 million subscriptions worldwide. They’ve expanded into over 190 countries. Outside of America, Netflix has offices Brazil, India, Japan, South Korea, and the Netherlands. They are also a member of MPAA (Motion Picture Association of America).
By 2016 the company released an estimate of 126 original series and films. This is more than any other cable or network channel. They are true revolutionaries of the entertainment industry. Netflix has been a pivotal player in transforming the entertainment world with their on-demand library of streamed content.
A Blockbuster Late Fee Sparked the Company Concept
Who knows if this is completely true, or an urban legend. But the story goes that the Netflix CEO Reed Hastings was appalled at a late fee that Blockbuster Video required for a movie rental. He decided that there should be a rental service without late fees. Up to date the company still has 4 million rental subscribers in America.
Blockbuster Didn’t Want To Buy Netflix
In 2000 Hastings decided to contact Blockbuster and offer them the online service as a complementary to their traditional brick and mortar business model. The offer was for $50 million. But Blockbuster declined the offer.
By 2005 the innovative online company had 4.5 million customers. And Blockbuster were struggling to adapt to the internet entertainment economy. In 2004 the traditional movie rental company peaked with close to 9 000 retail locations. By 2010, Blockbuster filed for bankruptcy. And at the end of 2017 they only had 9 stores left in operation. At the same time, Netflix was worth over $40 billion. In July 2018, the mighty Blockbuster was whittled down to a solitary branch in Bend, Oregon.
One-Third of All the Internet Traffic Goes To Netflix
Anybody that has used Netflix, knows how much data the online streaming site chows. If it’s hogging your bandwidth, imagine everybody else around the world logging into the service as well. During peak times Netflix streaming accounts for roughly one-third of the total worldwide internet traffic.
Original Content Worth $13 Billion
By 2018, Netflix’s budget for original content was roughly $13 billion. In the beginning their budget was only $8 billion to create their own original content. Their new target is about the same as the gross domestic product of Albania, and more than the total GDP of countries such as Madagascar. The main reason for increasing this budget, is to lock down on their licensing fees debt.
140 Million Hours Every Day
The rough streaming estimation of the average Netflix subscriber is about 90 minutes per day. Multiply this with the number of Netflix subscribers around the globe, and that adds up to more than a 1 billion hours of Netflix content streamed every week.
The First Netflix Original “Show”
To test out different video formats and streaming capabilities, Netflix created this strange 11-minute-long video clip. They wanted to ensure that the company could successfully stream high-definition content. It features various abstract clips.

Why can’t I stream Netflix in HD (High Definition)? If you are on the Netflix basic plan, you will only have access to Standard Definition (SD) viewing. Netflix offers three streaming plans. The plan you choose will determine how many people can stream series and movies from Netflix at the same time, as well as the streaming quality.
The Basic Plan lets one person stream series and movies from Netflix, in Standard definition (SD). The Standard Plan lets two people stream series and movies from Netflix, in High definition (HD) when available.
The Premium plan lets up to four people stream series and movies from Netflix, in High definition (HD) when available. Additionally, select titles will be available in Ultra HD 4K to those who are using new HD compatible devices.
You can change your plan at any time. To do so, visit netflix.com/changeplan. No matter what plan you choose, you will have unlimited access to all the TV shows and movies available on Netflix. And you can watch them on any Netflix ready device. Plus, you can install the Netflix app on as many devices as you want.
What is the Difference between Standard Definition (SD) and High Definition (HD) Viewing?
The Standard Definition (SD) video resolution is classified as 480p or 480i. The High Definition (HD) is 720p, 1080i, or 1080p. And Ultra HD 4K is 4096p. Your choice of video resolution will greatly influence the quality of your viewing experience, especially on larger format screens.
What Is Video Resolution?
The video resolution is based on how many pixels it takes to make up one frame of the video. A pixel is the smallest measuring unit of a picture. The more pixels in a frame, the clearer the image will be.
What Do The Numbers Mean?
Resolution is determined by the height of an image. Working on a 16:9 aspect ratio, a 1080 resolution picture is 1080 pixels high, and 1920 pixels wide. So that means that in total the image has 2,073,600 pixels
What Do the “I” And “P” Mean?
The “I” stands for “interlaced” and the “p” for “progressive scan”. Interlacing is a video viewing trick. Your eye thinks you’re seeing the full image in motion, but you are in actual fact only viewing every other line of the image. Your eyes will fill in the gaps automatically. This is a video streaming technique used to double the perceived video frame rate, without taking up extra bandwidth.
Progressive scan draws each line in sequential order, one at a time. A single frame is “painted” every 1/60th of a second. This means that twice the detail can be sent in the same time as an interlaced system. The image is more detailed and you’ll notice less flickering, a common flaw of interlaced scanning.
SD Resolution
SD is the standard quality resolution. Often it refers to 480 pixel height in an image. A single frame has more detail than a 144p, 240p, or 360p image. But less detail than a 720p or 1080p frame. You don’t want to drop below 480 for video streaming.
In the late 20th century it became the standard for most broadcast television, as well as DVD’s. The 480p is the common standard for digital video.
Streaming in Standard Definition (SD)
On the internet, a lot of uploaded videos and video streams are limited to the 480p standard definition format. But with the advancement in technology, the 480 resolution will soon be phased out by higher quality formats. You will need to ensure that your equipment is upgraded to handle the higher resolution streaming.
HD Resolution
HD (high definition) is a higher definition resolution. The pixel height is 720 or 1080 pixels. Each frame is displayed with more detail than the standard definition resolution. 720p is the bottom range of the resolution type. It’s often called “standard HD” or “HD ready”.
720p is the usual resolution used on the internet. Most modems will have 720p capabilities. The 720i isn’t a HD media standard in the industry, because of a lack of demand for it.
The 1080i and 1080p resolutions are called Full HD. These offer higher quality standards for HD streaming. Most television broadcasters prefer the 1080i format. 1080p is a more progressive format for video streaming content on internet platforms such as Netflix and YouTube.
When To Stream In High-Definition: SD vs HD vs 4K
The other HD resolution option, is Ultra HD 4K. It still refers to the pixel height, but rounds it up (or down) a little bit. Ultra HD 4K is usually either 3840 x 2160 pixels or 4096 x 2160 pixels. The second format is usually for big cinema screens.
4K is the latest craze in video resolution. The technology is still very new, on Netflix for example not all shows are available in this format yet. For now you can consider switching to the normal HD resolution for a higher viewing quality. But by 2024, an estimated 50% of American households will have 4K-enabled televisions.
If you are viewing video streaming content on a smaller screen, you can consider sticking to the SD resolution. But once you’ve compared the quality difference between SD and HD, you won’t easily switch back to SD.

Netflix stepped onto the entertainment scene in 1997, and they keep ruffling feathers in the entertainment industry. And in 2013, Netflix also decided to start creating their own shows. The innovative company’s first big hit was House of Cards. Since then, they’ve rolled out plenty of other original hits.
From traditional series, to documentaries – the Netflix production house is gaining more momentum by the minute! They produce some in-house. And others are co-produced in collaboration with other studios. The following is a list of the current best original Netflix series to binge watch.

Netflix sat up and took notice of the remarkable film, and approached Justin to expand on the concepts, fleshing it out into a series. Its second season kicked off in 2018, and the show is scheduled for a third season as well. Sam White (Logan Browning) creates a stir among the students with her outspoken radio show, called Dear White People. The director manages to tackle controversial topics in a tactful way. And the show offers different viewpoints on major issues such as identity, romance, socialization, and education.
